In this joint session with DTU, we will explore the intersection of quantum computing and supercomputing. As both fields continue to evolve, scale, and advance, great opportunities to achieve ground-breaking science await. With some of the leading practitioners worldwide coming together to discuss where we are now, what we need to do, and how we can get there together, this promises to be a highly interesting and thought-provoking session.

Expert Panel:

Adopting quantum computing devices hinges on building a classical control hardware pipeline that is scalable, extensible, and provides real time response. Classical control stack consists of multiple layers from high-level abstract languages down to analog pulse generators. Physical nature of quantum devices creates non-trivial architectural challenges for control hardware that cannot be solved with the existing approaches. It requires specialized hardware. In our research, we aim to undestand what are the capabilities and limitations of the quantum control hardware and how these limitations can be addressed for the future success of quantum computing.

Dr. Anastasiia Butko is a Research Scientist in the Computational Research Division at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL), CA. Her research interests lie in the general area of computer architecture, with particular emphasis on high-performance computing, emerging and heterogeneous technologies, associated programming models and architectural simulation techniques. Her primary research projects address architectural challenges in adopting novel technologies to provide continuing performance scaling in the approaching Post-Moore’s Law era. Dr. Butko is a chief architect of the custom control hardware stack for the Advanced Quantum Tested at LBNL.

Dr. Jan Goetz is a quantum physicist and co-founder of IQM, building quantum computers for the wellbeing of humankind. In a very short time, IQM has assembled an exceptional team of international quantum experts developing co-design quantum computers to tackle the hardest challenges humanity is facing. IQM´s breakthroughs include pioneering work for on-chip components for ultrafast processors and hardware-efficient solutions for application-specific computers. IQM has secured more than €71m of funding, including the largest seed investment round in Finnish history. Jan received his PhD on superconducting quantum circuits from TU Munich and continued as a Postdoc in Helsinki at Aalto University, where he holds a title of docent.

Dr. Mikael Johansson has the role of strategist for quantum technologies at CSC – IT Center for Science Ltd. (Finland). He oversees CSC’s participation in European and global initiatives related to quantum technologies. Johansson has twenty years of experience of studying and teaching quantum-mechanical methods and phenomena in chemical and biochemical systems. aInternational experience and insight have accrued from long-term research periods at the universities of Aarhus (Denmark), Girona (Spain), and the Technical University of Munich (Germany). Johansson holds an adjunct professorship in physical chemistry at the University of Helsinki, where, before his current position, he was head of the Computational Quantum Chemistry group.

Prof. Dr. Thomas Monz is an experimental quantum physicist with a background in the realization of quantum algorithms, verification and validation of quantum computers, and ion-trap based quantum technologies. He is co-founder and CEO of AQT, an Austrian quantum computer start-up.
